The Japanese design concept of Notan, which aims to balance a composition with light and dark shapes inspired this illustration. To create this polychromatic—multicolored—scene, I used the LGBTQ+ Pride flag colors as a starting point and analyzed the level of saturation and values of the hues until I found color relationships that evoked a sense of harmony, happiness and certainty. The horizontal arrangement of the figures together with the affectionate gesture reflect equality, rather than one of them being portrayed as more or less superior. My love of nature, open and inclusive communities, parks with bodies of water like Echo Park Lake in Los Angeles, California and Jamaica Pond in Boston, Massachusetts motivated the landscape.
